Customised Furniture vs Ready-Made Furniture — Which Should You Choose?

Customised Furniture vs Ready-Made Furniture — Which Should You Choose?

Ready-made furniture wins on two things: it is available today, and it is cheaper, because it is made in volume to one size. If your room is a standard shape and you need it this week, buy ready-made.

Customised wins everywhere else. It fits the space exactly, including the awkward corner, the low beam and the wall that is not quite square. You choose the carcass material rather than accepting whatever is inside — which matters most in kitchens and wardrobes, where the hidden board decides the life of the piece. And you can have internals planned around what you actually own.

The usual objection is time. A customised piece takes longer, because it is drawn, approved and then manufactured. Plan for that in your schedule rather than being surprised by it.

The usual misconception is cost. Customised is not automatically more expensive: you are not paying for a showroom markup, and one built-in wardrobe often replaces an almirah, loft boxes and a dressing unit.

A practical middle path: customise the built-ins — kitchen, wardrobes, TV unit, mandir — and buy loose pieces like chairs ready-made.
